This could be a vocal part, notes in a guitar solo, a string / pad, etc. What's it doing on beats 1 & 3 of the bar (the "strong" beats)? Figuring out the bass note isn't always going to help you identify the chord root, but it's going to be a key ingredient in the chord for sure.Ģ – On the 2nd passes, listen for the highest note. If the bass is jumping around a bunch, no problem. Just listen to what the bass is doing and write down the notes you can hear. If you have some kind of EQ section maybe boost the bass for this step. So headphones are helpful, largish speakers are excellent, really any decent studio monitor. This means listening using something that actually produces bass. A common approach is to take a few passes through the song and note some info.ġ - On the first passes, just listen for the lowest note.
